At Yoga East we offer over 20 classes per week making daily practice accessible. The classes are divided between led Ashtanga Classes and Mysore Style Classes. Both classrooms offer a supportive environment for learning and developing a practice. We offer daily classes for students of all levels. In traditional Mysore style classes students practice individually, working on whichever series or therapeutic loop they are currently practing with personalized assistance from the teachers. Our guided classes are designed to teach the fundamentals of the internal forms of Ashtanga yoga; the sequencing of postures, alignment, breathing, bandhas, mudra and dristi. We recommend that a student commits to using both teaching styles in order to fully embrace the correct method of Ashtanga Yoga.
Suggested Guidelines
Please do not eat for at least 2 hours prior to class, wear comfortable clothing, only consume water prior and post class, please refrain from wearing heavy scents, and women should not practice for at least the first 3 days of menstruation.
To practice right where one is as an individual, with hands-on structural and energetic guidance from a teacher, is to experience the magic and wisdom of a mysore-style classroom. This great gift has been passed down to us through the teaching lineage from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India, and its one-on-one approach within a group setting is the most effective method for developing your Ashtanga Yoga practice. While the student works at their own pace and within their own thresholds, the teacher is present to assist and instruct with regard to sequencing, breath coordination (vinyasa), and postural alignment.
Ideal for students of all levels, memorization of sequence or “adeptness” at “full expression” of posture are not pre-requisites for attendance. In fact, newer practitioners and those working through injury or other specific limitations are especially welcome. Truly the breeding ground for inspiration and commitment in one’s personal practice, we invite you to infuse your practice schedule with some mysore-style classes. The results are sure to be transformative.

Create
a firm foundation to build your practice upon by solidifying
the basics. At the core of the Ashtanga asana practice is
vinyasa, the dynamic marriage of steady breathing
synchronized with physical movement. From that base, and
with verbal and hands-on instruction from the teacher, the
standing and seated postures will begin to find their way
towards a sense of alignment and groundedness. Even pacing
in this class allows for this instruction to become
interwoven with a meditative flow that is still energizing
and challenging.
Perfect for the newer student or those returning to their
practice after injury or interruption, come and connect or
reconnect with the many reasons why this remarkable system
of yoga is so beneficial.
Just
as the name implies, All are welcome.
Our goal as teachers is to teach to the entirety of
those present, and an All Levels class is exactly that,
a collective experience. Holding firmly to the
fundamental Ashtanga asana principle of vinyasa, these
classes flow through standing and seated postures as
well as backbending and inversions. Pacing is steady
and dynamic, creating both purification through internal
heat and inspiration through the group energy. For the
newer practitioner moving forward, or the seasoned
practitioner wanting the energy of a led class mixed
into their mysore and personal practice schedule, this
is the place to be.
The
various asana sequences of the Ashtanga Yoga system
progressively build from their foundation, Primary
Series. Traditionally led once a week, many
practitioners experience it as the nucleus of and
springboard for their practice week. The collective
energy and meditative flow that arise from surrender to
the verbal lead are profoundly grounding for any level
of practitioner.
Starting with the Suryanamaskaras and standing sequence,
the seated postures of Primary then take us all the way
to backbending, inversions and closing. Stopping
halfway (at Navasana) and proceeding directly to the
closing sequence is also a completely acceptable choice
and one that is commonly made. Thus the name is often
seen on the schedule as “Half / Primary”.
Regardless of your choice as to duration, the
traditional sequencing literally vibrates with innate
wisdom as it logically and progressively flows.
Challenging, but fully accessible, this class, once
experienced, will seat itself firmly into your schedule.
Second Series
With Kimberly
Jan 22nd, Feb 26th, Mar 25th
The Second Series is known as Nadi Shodana, which means "nerve cleansing". This series focuses on the energetic regions of the spine, pelvis, and hips. Experience traditional pacing and vinyasa of Ashtanga's Intermediate,SecondSeries. Student must have experience with Second Series in the Mysore classroom up to eka pada sirsasana. It is through deeper spinal integration that each individual will access both the expansion and contraction present in their energetic body. By taking the focus to the back plane of the body, this practie opens the HEART, creates more FREEDOM in the body, and inner clarity and PEACE of mind.
Sundays 8:30 - 9am
It has been said that the most advanced posture in all of yoga is sitting still. What we cultivate in our practices of the first four limbs, Yama (self-restraints), Niyama (observances), Asana (posture), Pranayama(breath control), leads us to this steady seat where the fruits of that work can ripen into the last four limbs, Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (constant integration)
This class invites you to prepare your seat through pranayama, chanting and basic meditation techniques. From there, we just sit, allowing that stillness to penetrate our being and do its work. Simple in format, this class offers a process that facilitates nurturing the heart, getting rid of restlessness and negativity and freeing our self from expectations and the many identities of life.
An essential practice, we quote Nancy Gilgoff when we say: “Developing asana without meditation is like building a house on quicksand”.
