Ashtanga Fundamentals & Essential Research
1st & 4th Wednesday of the month: 2/22,2/29, 3/7,
3/28, 4/4,4/25
with Kimberly & Yoga East teachers
If,
svadhyaya (study/self-study) is called for by the Niyamas in
the 2nd limb of Ashtanga Yoga, then research is
most definitely essential. In this class, focus is on
details and subtleties that often don’t get the time and
attention they need during traditional vinyasa pacing. From
the big toe to the fingertips, concepts like grounding,
lengthening, aligning, revolving, expanding and ascending
are explored, and volumes of information rise from within.
Neither a restorative nor a vinyasa class, it is impossible
to pigeonhole or predict the uniquely penetrating nature of
each session. Demanding and rich, but appropriate for all
levels, come join us and bring a true classroom experience
into your practice.
Yin and Yoga Sutras
2nd Wednesday of the month: 2/8, 3/7, 4/11
with Karen Joy
and Laura
This
series combines the therapeutic effects of Yin Yoga with the
Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Yin Yoga is a deep and still
practice, using long holds to lengthen and stretch the
connective tissues of the body, remove energetic blocks, and
increase circulation. Gravity is utilized, rather than
props, to help intensify stretches naturally. The origins of
the Yin practice date back thousands of years and have roots
in Daoism and Hatha yoga. In modern times, Yin Yoga has been
prominently advocated by Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers, who
learned the practice from Paulie Zink and Dr. Motoyama. Yin
Yoga is an ideal way to prepare the body to sit for
meditation and chanting the Yoga Sutras.
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a "complete manual for the
study and practice of yoga." Though the Sutras are over five
thousand years old, their wisdom is as potent and relevant
today as it was then. These 196 aphorisms thread together
seamlessly to offer invaluable insight into yoga practice
and the practice of life. After opening our bodies in the
Yin practice, we will sit with the Sutras, chanting the
original Sankrit and exploring in English. This class
welcomes students of all levels and no prior knowledge of
Sanskrit or the Sutras is necessary. "Atha Yoganusasanam!"
now is the Moment that yoga begins!
Ayurveda
3rd Wednesday of the month: 2/15, 3/21, 4/18
with Betty
“The foundation of yoga should be Ayurveda and the fruit of Ayurveda should be yoga.” David Frawley
Ayurveda can be called the yoga of healing. Ayurveda focuses on the individual and depends upon his/her level of practice, temperament and constitution. It works to assist in the individuals healing, right lifestyle and spiritual development. Treatment protocol for Ayurveda considers what goes into the body, which is predominately food, and how the body expresses itself, which is mainly exercise. How we eat, and how we perform asana are of primary importance. To understand ourselves is to understand the three fundamental energies that govern the universe: energy, light and matter. These forces when infused with prana form the doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. As we are each unique in our expression of the doshas, self knowledge and self study help us to personalize our life practices. The end result brings balance not only to our health, but can help to actualize our full human potential.
